Climate Controlled Units

When it comes to self-storage, some items require climate control while others fare well with standard self-storage. Learn how to decide if you need climate controlled storage with this helpful checklist:

  • Bedding, including mattresses: Climate controlled storage is essential. Bedding is particularly vulnerable to high humidity levels which can cause a musty odor, mildew growth, dust and other objectionable problems once removed from storage.
  • Bikes and sports equipment: Climate control is rarely required for most metal objects except in the highest humidity areas like Florida where they will rust over a very long period of time. Otherwise, bikes and most metallic sporting equipment do just fine in a regular self storage unit.
  • Appliances:Appliances are metal and rarely require climate controlled storage. Be sure to clean thoroughly before storing and leave enough space to keep refrigerator doors open.
  • Books, paperwork and other documents: Books and other documents should be stored in a climate controlled facility to avoid deterioration and the growth of mold, mildew and musty odors.
  • Clothing, curtains and other linens: Cloth items should be stored in a climate controlled facility except for very short periods of time. Make sure all fabrics are clean prior to storing and use hangers whenever possible. Ventilation and low humidity levels are very important for the proper storage of all fabrics and textiles.
  • Furniture: Most furniture benefits from climate controlled storage; wood, fabrics and even metal all are subject to damage from high humidity levels over extended periods of time. However, depending upon the type of furniture, it is possible to use a regular storage facility without harm for shorter periods of time or for storing non-fabric furniture.
  • Dishes, glassware and kitchen items: Most kitchen glassware, tableware and other related items can be stored in any type of facility without risk of harm. Make sure they are clean and well packed before placing them into storage.
  • Tools: Most tools do not require climate controlled storage but be sure humidity levels remain at an acceptable level. Clean tools and wipe with a few drops of oil before storing.
  • Computers and electronics: Computers and electronics of all types are sensitive to temperature extremes as well as humidity, dusty and other pollutants so climate controlled storage is essential, and you may want to find dust free storage as well.
